About the PDS:
The aim of this study is to find out whether being a teacher provides opportunities in local communities and the wider society that are not otherwise available; does teaching enhance their agency and thus empower them. I believe this research to be relevant in Aceh because inside the school female teachers have responsibility and authority over their students but then return to the patriarchal society. This suggests a noteworthy interplay between their role as a teacher and a woman in Acehnese society.
I am particularly interested in religious education teachers because religion is foundational to Acehnese society and therefore the responsibility of passing on religious knowledge is critical. Secondly, recent literature has suggested that Islam requires more gender sensitive or even openly feminist interpretations of the Qu’ran in order to progress, thus studying female religious education teachers is both topical and relevant.
There is a widening gulf between the West and the Islamic world particularly in relation to women therefore it is necessary to conduct this research because it will provide a small albeit, amount of data on such an important topic. This hints at the wider socio-political implications of the topic and increases its relevance and importance.
