Potret Islam di Aceh saat ini terbentuk dari studi-studi mendalam terkait dengan penerapan Syariat Islam. Hal ini telah memunculkan sebuah gambaran Islam di Aceh sebagai Islam konservatif yang tidak menghargai HAM, merendahkan perempuan, dan anti demokrasi. Potret demikian terbentuk karena Islam di Aceh hanya dilihat dari kacamata hukum semata dan mengabaikan fakta pluralitas cara beragama yang ada dalam masyarakat Aceh. Kenyataannya Islam di Aceh tidak dapat direduksi pada dimensi hukum semata, namun ada juga dimensi tarekat yang sangat kaya dan kuat.

Realitas sejarah menunjukkan kegagalan pengelolaan kehutanan di Indonesia dan Aceh. Aceh memiliki peluang untuk memperbaiki pengelolaan kehutanan dengan adanya Otonomi Khusu bagi Aceh. Akan tetapi, Otonomi khusus bagi Aceh belum dapat sepenuhnya mewujudkan keadilan dan kesejahteraan rakyat, termasuk di bidang kehutanan. Masyarakan di dalam hutan dan seputaran masih banyak yang miskin. Berbagai kebijakan yang ada (diantaranya, UU Pemerintah Aceh, UU Pemerintah Daerah, dan UU Kehutanan beserta peraturan pelaksanaannya) cenderung bersifat sektoral dan terkadang tumpang tindih. Akibatnya, penyelenggara pemerintah di tiap level pemerintahan melakukan tafsirnya sendiri terhadap aturan yang ada (Bakti Siahaan dkk, 2009).

The history of Muslim settlement in Australia has been dated on 13th century, and since then Some Muslims have assimilated and integrated to the mainstream society, Likewise, Indonesian Muslim communities in Australia have integrated, and some of them in fact assimilated to the mainstream society. This is so, since identity is hybrid and also fluid; it changes folowing the changes of time and space. Family, Muslim community centers, Islamic and Australian public schools are spaces where identity is molded and shaped. Most Muslims, especially young Muslims position themselves within multiple settings;they sometimes find it difficult to negotiate between being young and being Muslim.

The current state of peace in Aceh is celebrated as a case of successful implementation of humanitarian, developement and security aid in a post-conflict environment (Lopes Cardozo and Shah, 2014), even though it is clear that the full implications of the civil war have still not been addressed. Aceh is further worthy of study because of its "perceived break" ((Lopes Cardozo and Shah, forthcoming), 2) from cultural and political conflicts in the past, in an effort to remake itself after a violent and tragic history. Therefore, this research hopes to make a small constribution towards understanding the contextual nuances and logistics which shape notions of peacebuilding in Islamic, post-conflict settings.
