Disaster Research: Tips and Ethics

Using examples of recent research projects, this talk highlights some of the lesser known methodological and ethical challenges in the field of disaster research. The session focusses on three aspects of research in post or pre disaster contexts:
1. Common dilemmas and hidden questions in designing disaster research.
2. Ethical considerations about collecting and using data (qualitative and/or quantitative) in disaster research.
3. Being an ethical researcher in the 'insider-outsider' continuum.
 
Participants are encouraged to think about their own experiences and be ready to share them as part of the open discussion at the end of the talk, in an effort to learn from each other.

“In this talk I will discuss my research approach that combines street ethnography, life histories and collaboration with a film documentarist in order to document the everyday and mundane non-elite lives in post-tsunami Banda Aceh. The stories that unfold offer insights into layered exiles and displacement; hidden narratives of violence, grief and reconciliation; struggles over gendered expectations of being a good and respectable woman and man; the hierarchical political economy of post-conflict & tsunami reconstruction; and multiple ways of arranging lives and remembrance, cherishing loved and remembrance, cherishing loved ones and forming caring and loving relationships outside the normative nations of nuclear family & home.”

Mengungkap Perlawanan Gayo-Alas dan Kekejaman Genosida Belanda 1904

Dari 8 Februari hingga 23 Juli 1904, Kolonel CIT Van Daalen memimpin 10 brigade marsose untuk mematahkan perlawanan tentara Muslimin yang masih melakukan perang geriliya terhadap Belanda dari pedalaman dataran tinggi Gayo dan Alas. Selama ekspedisi yang berlangsung selama 163 hari tersebut, pasukan Van Daalen membantai tidak kurang dari 4.061 jiwa secara membabi buta di Tanah Gayo dan Alas. Hampir sepertiga korban adalah perempuan dan anak-anak. 
Sejak April 2015, tiga wartawan dan budayawan senior: Iwan Gayo, LK Ara, dan Oedin dela Rosa melakukan “Ekspedisi dan rekonstruksi genosida Belanda di Dataran Tinggi Gayo”. Ekspedisi ini mendapat dukungan dari anggota DPR dan DPD RI dari Aceh. Di antara kegiatan yang dilaksanakan adalah pemetaa tujuh benteng di Tanoh Gayo dan tiga benteng di Tanoh Alas yang menjadi tempat pertahanan laskar Muslimin. Ekspedisi ini juga mewawancarai para keturunan para pengungsi dari Gayo yang hijrah ke Langkat (Sumatera Utara), Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Timur dan Aceh Utara pada masa pembantaian Van Daalen 1904. Berdasarkan hasil ekspedisi Van Daalen 2015 ini, tujuh pengacara yang tergabung dalam “seven wonder lawyer of Gayo” berencana menuntut Pemerintah Belanda untuk meminta maaf terhadap masyarakat Gayo.

Iwan Gayo adalah wartawan senior asal Takengon peraih Hadiah Adinegoro 1981. Iwan Gayo dikenal oleh jutaan orang Indonesia sebagai penyusun seri Buku Pintar yang referensi legendaris.

Abstract
Mawah is traditional financing and investment mechanisme which has been practiced by rural communities in Aceh for generations. It is mechanism in which the capital or assets holder authorizes the share-holder (poor household) to manage/cultivate the capitals/assets (e.g. cattle, farm) with specified profit and lost sharing. Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Frameworks, this study examines the role of Mawah in providing access to livelihoods capitals to the rural poor in Aceh. At the same time, the study also assesses the feasibility to promote Mawah as an alternative option to tackle rural poverty.
This study adopts qualitative method and employs a number of qualitative techniques including Key Informant Interview (KII), Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and Participant s Observation. The data collection has been taking place during September-October 2015 in eight communities in Aceh Besar and Pidie district.
